BERLIN SOUVENIR OF FRIEDRICHSHAIN

BERLIN SOUVENIR OF FRIEDRICHSHAIN

The focus of my project is the idea of souvenirs. The cultural sphere, of which my created souvenirs relate to, is the Berlin district “Friedrichshain”. I have been living there and so I am trying to put my individual perception into these objects and make them accessible and understandable for other people. However, I intended to avoid typical touristic perspectives. The most impressive part of Friedrichshain is “Karl-Marx-Allee” (with its transition to “Frankfurter Allee”). A 2.3 km long boulevard with magnificent  residential houses, built in Soviet gingerbread style. This avenue traverses the district centrally and marks its extension. But I was also interested in the contrast between the centrally located “Karl-Marx-Allee” and  loads of colourful surrounding side streets, which are ornamented with Street Art style walls, many posters and old next to newly restored house fronts. The major aim was to transmit this mixture into a collection of mainly textiles. The fabrics are supposed to tell a story like e.g. awakening memories of a walk along “Karl-Marx-Allee” with a slight detour into side streets like” Riga-, Niederbarnim or Mainzerstraße”. Their colour palette is derivated from the sandy colours of Karl-Marx-Allee and the brash colours of the posters spread across the entire neighbourhood.

Matching to the textile a collection of jewellery has been created, which was inspired by the partly ornamented details of the quarter.
