SAKURA

A sustainable range of fabrics

The cherry tree often serves as the prime example of a self-sufficient, natural material cycle. For SAKURA, I utilized some of its elements: cherry stones, cherry leaves, cherry blossoms and cherry juice. The basic concept allows the possibility of arranging cherry stones in a sewn grid that is held together by two layers of fabric. Depending on the construction and material, the stones can either be freely positioned or – when  arranged densely – form a more rigid structure. Further experimentation using cherry blossoms and cherry juice for dyeing resulted in a harmonious spectrum of colour featuring fine nuances of brown, red, rose, green and yellow. The cotton and linen designs can be heated in the oven and due to their capacity to store heat, be used to relieve shoulder and back pains. The sustainable life cycle of my fabrics exists in two respects: If you don’t like them any more, you can promptly compost them. But at the same time, the cycle can be endlessly repeated due to the inherent flexibility of the stone structure and the impermanence of the colours always allowing the possibility of re-dyeing and re-arranging the cherry stones.
